Through the act of dissection the raw essential components of a Furry is exposed. Small ceramic sculptures expose a rawness that is meant to be covered in fur.
The piece is a mock-up, that represents a segment of the fully realized piece. Ideally, there should be a whole room covered with the carpet that eliminates the boundaries set by the limited dimensions of the mock-up. Filling the room would free the installation piece, and allow the viewer to be able to truly walk around the ceramics, rather than being intimidated to step into a defined space.
Boundaries in which the ceramics reside creates a space for examination, similar to a dissection table where close inspection of an object is performed. The process of dissecting an object by peeling the layers away to show all the different components is the way I approached the furry fandom. Viewing the fandom from an outsider’s perspective allows me to develop a more objective view that becomes almost anthropological. By being part of the MICA Furry Club, I was able to find general trends and subjects that repetitively resurfaced such as identity, otherness, genuineness, and sexuality.
The piece is displayed in diagonal similar to a hunting rug. Giving a trophy-like quality to the ceramics. Which commands a certain amount of respect and preciousness. Respect and validation is something that the Furry Fandom is constantly pursuing, through other members or within society.
